 About Nicole Berke:

Nicole's love of music and singing comes from her musician parents.  Growing up in the Boston area, she learned to combine her love of singing with her love of the piano.  At the age of thirteen, she began writing her own songs, later taking part in weekly blues jam at the Acton Jazz Café.  In the fall of 2005 Nicole began attending UMass Amherst, where she met and teamed up with bassist Jesse Cafiero. Accompanied by Jesse's talent on acoustic bass, Nicole recorded and released a six-song demo, "Rise" in 2006, which put her out on the scene as "a musician to watch." In September of 2007, Nicole moved to Cambridge, MA to pursue music where she quickly developed a loyal and supportive fan base as she attended open mics regularly and played a number of shows.

In February of 2008, Nicole finished her debut studio recording, the self-released "Frondescence EP." Backed by Jesse Cafiero on upright bass and Rory O'Connor on drums, every song on the EP has it's own individuality, from the opening soul groove of 'C'mon' to the closing dynamic swells of the title track 'Frondescence.' Nicole spent 2008 and 2009 playing around the Northeast promoting the new album and signed with KeyMedia Group in early 09 while continuing to attend school. “Balancing school and music has been difficult but essential. I have always known that music is what I want to do with my life, but the learning process and experiences I have had so far have been extremely worthwhile.”

In September of 2009 Nicole moved to Portland, Oregon where she has just completed her last year of college at Portland State College with a  BA degree in Social Psychology from University of Massachusetts. Nicole  is embarking on her first national tour in July and August of 2010 as a special guest performer with Kiernan McMullan.

FRONDESCENCE- 5 Song EP

Come On; Reasons; Blind Dumb & Deaf; Fire; Frondescence

Released 2008

Nicole Berke is a breath of fresh air. Writing son...Nicole Berke is a breath of fresh air. Writing songs with a level of virtuosity comparable to Ben Folds, Nicole Berke exudes a warmth and vulnerability to buoy her lyric and multi-timbered voice. Frondescence is the biological term for bursting into leaf; a becoming. In the vernacular, it means blooming. Frondescence is a blooming for Nicole Berke, who comes out as an incredible talent with a bright future.”  -Wildy's World Review   Rating: 5 Stars (Out of 5)

We’re glad Nicole Berke didn’t wait to record a fu...We’re glad Nicole Berke didn’t wait to record a full length CD because her debut EP release is a fabulous enough sample to help us all fall in love with her straight away. Nicole’s soulfully strong vocal skills combined with her clever songwriting talent certainly makes her one Mass’ up & coming artists to watch out for.”- Boston Girl Guide Review by TC Krentz

Nicole Berke is a rising star on the international...Nicole Berke is a rising star on the international music scene with her unique blend of pop and jazz elements.  Her debut EP, "Frondescence", features 5 tracks and showcases not only her piano pop songwriting skills but also her throaty big voice which reminds me of Sarah McLachlan among others.  Her sound is extremely polished and professional and a real credit to such a young artist. Once Nicole Berke experiences more of what life's all about - she will be a real force to be reckoned with!” - Black Label Review by Karen Waters

The One and Nines Set to Release Track

“JUST Your Fool” as a 7” 45rpm vinyl single

New York, NY (Wednesday, September 1, 2010) - When you first hear The One and Nines, their invigorating fusion of past, present and future begs the question, “How long have they been around, and why haven’t I heard of them before?” The sound is vaguely familiar — almost vintage but at the same time brand new. If you haven’t heard them yet it’s because The One and Nines is an indie band out of New Jersey and their road has only just begun.

The single, Just Your Fool, a 7” 45rpm vinyl record from the self-titled and produced The One and Nines EP, is being released on September 28th on Brooklyn-based Cotter Records and distributed by Traffic Entertainment Group out of Boston. The band performs regularly in the tri-state area. This summer they have been chosen to be one of the featured bands to perform at the South Orange International Blues Festival (SOIBF) held on Sunday, September 12th. It is hard to describe the energy and originality of The One and Nines’ sound, and the enthusiastic response the audience has to them, unless experienced firsthand. Local music fans and media will not want to miss their 3 PM set. With more shows scheduled in and around Manhattan, the vinyl release party and show for JUST YOUR FOOL will be at Sullivan Hall on Thursday, September 30 at 8PM. It promises to be a pivotal night for the band and their growing fans.

The One and Nines started by chance in the summer of 2007 when a group of Jersey City friends — including songwriter and unofficial spokesperson Jeff Marino and vocal interpreter/lead singer Vera Sousa, a native of Portugal who grew up singing in Kearny, NJ — teamed up for a “soul”-themed house party that set the stage for the group’s future endeavors. As the musicians strung together tunes by the Meters, Aretha Franklin, Etta James and of course James Brown, the band and partygoers realized that behind the party charade stood real talent and a passion for a very specific, almost forgotten style of music.

Marino, who began emulating guitarists such as Steve Cropper and Pops Staples at a young age, is quick to express why he is so attracted to the classic rhythm & blues and rock & roll of the 50’s and 60’s: “Timeless music, timeless soul. This music came from a different world than the one we live in today, but the human connection created is lasting and real, and that’s fascinating to me.”

The band’s style and influences come from a wide range of vintage American music, the fusion of rock & roll and soul being the most apparent. They take many of their cues from artists such as Otis Redding, Bo Diddley and Irma Thomas. Their ultimate goal is to communicate their messages by blending a respected and brilliant sound from the past with a raw modern edge to create a sound that can be appreciated by music lovers of any generation. Their repertoire includes a combination of original music and their own versions of half-forgotten blues and soul classics.

The One and Nines EP contains six original songs along with a hidden track that is the version of Just Your Fool to be released as a vinyl single. The EP has already received airplay on WEVL’s “Soul Stew” out of Memphis, and Felix Hernandez’s legendary “Rhythm Revue” on 88.3FM WBGO out of Newark, NJ. Recorded in 2009 at 9 Lives Studio in Jersey City with owner and engineer Nicola Stemmer, the recording process was 100% analog. The tracks were mixed down to tape at Excelled Recording in Brooklyn with studio-owner/engineer and bluesman Hugh Pool at the helm, and mastered by Fred Kevorkian (whose credits include Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins and the White Stripes).

While Marino’s songwriting and Sousa’s alluring vocal riffs fashion a driving creative force, the two gain solid support from the soulful and emotional instrumentation of their backing band, which includes a three-piece horn section, bass, percussion and keys. The band’s subtle and classy arrangements and production are rooted in the grooves and tone of their favorite record labels — Stax, Sun, Atlantic — and are performed with spontaneity and sincerity. They strive en masse to exude the same sharpness and energy every time they perform live and to inspire fervor within their audiences. Sousa is quick to chime in: “We love to perform. The more we perform the more defined we become. People are always telling us how much they love what we are doing and asking us what we call our brand of music. All I can say is it’s The One and Nines.”

The One & Nines are a rhythm & blues band based out of Jersey City, NJ.  The band’s style and influences come from a wide range of American music, but what is most apparent is the sound of the great rock & roll and soul music of the 50’s & 60’s.  Vera Sousa’s stylish, sexy and vibrant vocals are perfectly supported by the band’s big sound (horn section included). The One & Nines (Self Titled EP) is their self-produced recording debut. The subtle and classy arrangements and production are rooted in the grooves and tone of the band's favorite recordings (Stax Records, Irma Thomas, Spector) and performed with a spontaneity and sincerity that give the record a raw modern edge.  The band has been hard at work mining forgotten styles and creating a sound that is sparking the interest of both serious music connoisseurs and accidental listeners waiting to discover their next musical inspiration.
